orlando (1992)

[to be read in a british accent]: While this undefineable multi-period period drama had slightly too much whimsy to truly ever know where it itself was going, one must applaud the ambition and weirdness, and Tilda Swinton is (as ever) a delight.

passing (2021)

This gorgeously shot character drama, while ostensibly about 1920s race relations, has other, deeper focuses that end up using the race questions as a backdrop - and though by the end the whole movie’s various themes don’t quite gel together as well as they could, I must applaud the attempt for its originality and verve.

Salt (2010)

this russian spy action thriller is incoherent: badly written and poorly shot - and it’s made all the worse by the fact that both the casting and the premise have real promise; it could’ve been great.

true romance (1993)

come for the early celebrity cameos from brad pitt, sam l jackson, val kilmer and tony soprano, but leave early for the 90s racism and misogyny, generally weird tone and bad ending - slater's character is annoying and made me wish the movie was about someone else.
