This gorgeously shot character drama, while ostensibly about 1920s race relations, has other, deeper focuses that end up using the race questions as a backdrop - and though by the end the whole movie’s various themes don’t quite gel together as well as they could, I must applaud the attempt for its originality and verve.
Loved it as a kid, thought it was dumb in my 20s, now I’ve come back around on this classic sci-fi emo thriller, not only did it inspire a whole raft of culture in its wake, it’s honestly pretty inspiring and touching.
