Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Deeply conflicted about this film, it’s quite clever, the casting, acting, dialogue, music, cinematography all top notch, I just don’t think the setting ever really connects with any of the rest of it; rather than a beautiful dark comedy set in the end of ww2 in germany it ends up feeling like a movie about the end of ww2 in germany, and also whoops someone turned up the “dark comedy” and “sentimental” dial really high but we’re not sure why.

Both the sci-fi elements and the scientist characters are really fun and involving in this carl sagan book adaptation - but on the other hand the love interest is really annoying and the movie should’ve been 30 minutes shorter.

Maelstrom by Peter Watts

Watts’s second entry in the Rifters series doesn’t quite have the same unique magnetic characters of the first (and maybe it has slightly too many characters in general) but what it lacks in story it makes up for in prediction and world - read this to wallow in a truly terrible future dystopia that feels extremely likely.
