memories of ice by Steven Erikson

As I blast thru the third book of this incredibly long fantasy epic (up to 26 books across two authors already!), all I can say is that there are altogether too many characters, the world's magic/deity system feels a lot like calvinball, and this could have easily been two whole books - and yet despite all that, I couldn't put it down.

Both the sci-fi elements and the scientist characters are really fun and involving in this carl sagan book adaptation - but on the other hand the love interest is really annoying and the movie should’ve been 30 minutes shorter. 

Maelstrom by Peter Watts

Watts’s second entry in the Rifters series doesn’t quite have the same unique magnetic characters of the first (and maybe it has slightly too many characters in general) but what it lacks in story it makes up for in prediction and world - read this to wallow in a truly terrible future dystopia that feels extremely likely.
